UNICEF Announces Gala to Celebrate 50 Years of Celebrity Goodwill Ambassador Program
Thursday August 7, 3:03 pm ET
Whoopi Goldberg to Host Star-Studded Event on December 3
Halle Berry to Serve as Honorary Event Chair

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- UNICEF today announced plans for the "UNICEF Goodwill Gala," a star-studded event to benefit the organization's efforts to ensure the health, education, equality and protection of every child. The inaugural affair, "UNICEF Goodwill Gala: 50 Years of Celebrity Advocacy," will commemorate a half-century of celebrity support on the organization's behalf. UNICEF-supporter Whoopi Goldberg will host the "UNICEF Goodwill Gala" and Halle Berry will serve as honorary event chair. The event takes place on December 3 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

In 1953, UNICEF became the first global organization to recognize and harness the power of celebrity to further global issues and causes when it named beloved American entertainer Danny Kaye its first Goodwill Ambassador. Today, organizations dedicated to a wide array of causes tap into the power of celebrity to engage the public and foster change.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank UNICEF's celebrity supporters for working selflessly to do what they can to help improve children's lives worldwide," said Charles J. Lyons, president, U.S. Fund for UNICEF. "These supporters are known and loved by millions and have chosen to take that familiarity, trust and respect to help focus the world's eyes on the needs of children."

UNICEF's alignment with celebrity began 50 years ago when Mr. Kaye circled the globe, making speeches, giving performances, acting as master of ceremonies for special events and informing the public about children's needs. Since then, lending their name, time and energy, hundreds of celebrities have followed in Mr. Kaye's footsteps, including Audrey Hepburn, Roger Moore, Harry Belafonte, Mia Farrow, Sarah Jessica Parker, Laurence Fishburne and Tea Leoni -- to name a few. From George Harrison and Ravi Shankar whose Concert for Bangladesh marked the first time musicians collaborated for a common humanitarian cause; and the numerous trips made to impoverished countries by Audrey Hepburn; to Sarah Jessica Parker encouraging America's kids to Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF; and nationally-televised specials featuring Barbra Streisand, Julie Andrews, Richard Burton, Harry Belafonte and Shirley MacLaine, celebrities have helped to bring the faces and stories of disadvantaged children into living rooms around the world.

To date, UNICEF-supporters scheduled to attend the "UNICEF Goodwill Gala" include Jessica Lange, Claudia Schiffer, Tea Leoni, Mia Farrow, Roger Moore, Judy Collins and Vendela. With Ms. Goldberg as host and Halle Berry as UNICEF's Honorary Event Chair, the gala will also include special appearances and performances, paying tribute to outstanding individuals in the entertainment and music industries and honoring a corporation for its commitment to social responsibility.

Tickets and tables to the "UNICEF Goodwill Gala" will be available beginning September 8th. Prices, which also include sponsorship packages, range from - ,000. Tickets may be purchased by contacting Levy, Pazanti & Associates at 310/201-5033. "UNICEF Goodwill Gala" is scheduled to take place on December 3 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel at 6:30pm.

The evening will benefit UNICEF's global education programs to give 120 million children in developing nations access to quality basic education, including the skills and knowledge they need to survive.

Leoni Hikes for Cancer Research
Sun Oct 13, 2:55 PM ET

Tea Leoni has been getting little sleep raising her 3-month old son and 3-year-old daughter with former "X-Files" star David Duchovny (news), but she still found time and energy to take a hike for breast cancer (news - web sites) research.

"You got to go. You got to be there. It's an amazing event," Leoni said.

She said it wasn't easy finishing the hike through several miles of the Santa Monica Mountains to support and raise funds for the Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research.

"I get pretty tired," the 36-year-old actress said in a telephone interview. "The other day I forgot my son's name."

Leoni said she wants to contribute to the fight against breast cancer because she knows too many women with the disease.

"My new goal is that when my daughter is my age, breast cancer will be just something that she can talk about to her kids from history books."

Leoni, who had a role in "Jurassic Park III," said she even signed a bra after learning that proceeds from the auction item will help the cause.

"However creative we can be to finding a cure, let's do it," she said.

"People I Know" is Tea's latest film. There has been no release date set as yet.
"People I Know" Film Reviews"

Pacino film loses Towers drugs scene

An Al Pacino movie, People I Know, will lose an important drug scene because it features the World Trade Centre.Pacino plays a New York press agent who heads for New York's financial district on a drug binge. In a surreal sequence, through his eyes we see the two towers sideways, symbolising how his world is turned on end. But after the terrorist attacks, the scene may be misinterpreted.
In the film Al Pacino must scramble when his major client becomes embroiled in a huge scandal.
Of its World Trade Centre scene, producer Leslie Urdang says: "It is an abstract, highly stylised shot that is completely inappropriate and will be removed from the film." The edit will be delayed because the film's cutting room is located in Ground Zero, where the towers fell.

Tea will be on the Premiere episode of the brand new Oxygen Cable-TV series "O2Be" which "...satirically celebrates the over-saturation of self-help, dieting and relationships and mocks the conspicuous consumption of fashion and celebrity". Her skit will reveal her heartbreaking battle with morbid obesity -- realizing one day after the birth of her first child, she had "ballooned" up to 129 lbs. :) The episode will air Sunday, September 22 at 7:30 pm.
